Cambridge Mill is one of those dream, bucket-list venues that I think almost every wedding vendor in the area wants to work at at least once. Set along the Grand River, the venue is incredibly beautiful, with historic stone, water views and a really impressive reception space. It definitely comes with a higher price tag, but you can see where some of that premium comes from when you arrive. For this couple, I supplied silk flower rentals in a soft spring palette of dusty rose, blush pink and white. Their flowers included roses and lamb’s ear, with urn centrepieces, ceremony chair décor, head table garlands and all of their personal flowers.
One of the nice things about working with silk flowers is how straightforward the setup can be. I was able to bring everything in ready to place, so I spent the morning setting the pink table runners, positioning the urn centrepieces and taking my time attaching the garland to the head table. Everything came together beautifully against the classic setting of Cambridge Mill, and the soft spring colours added just enough colour while still keeping the overall look light and elegant.
The ceremony setup was a little more challenging. Cambridge Mill hosts multiple weddings on many summer Saturdays, with several reception rooms and a ceremony location overlooking the river, so there is a very carefully timed turnover between events. I actually had to leave and come back later for my allocated vendor setup window. When I arrived, the previous couple had only just finished their ceremony and some of their guests were still lingering in the ceremony area while the other florist was beginning to tear down. I had to start working my way in and setting up around the transition. It was definitely one of those moments where you really feel how many weddings a large, popular venue can have moving through it in a single day. There is a very well-oiled system to it all, but as a vendor, the timing can feel rushed compared with working at a smaller venue where you have more freedom to arrive and set up at your own pace.
Despite that, Cambridge Mill is undeniably beautiful and it was a lovely wedding to be part of. The river setting, historic architecture and elegant reception spaces give the venue a look that is difficult to recreate anywhere else. The end of the night was definitely a workout, though! With the amount of stairs involved in teardown, I made plenty of trips back and forth carrying urns, centrepieces and the rest of the silk flowers back to the car. By the time everything was packed away, I had definitely earned my drive home.
