The Magic Hour of Stillness in the Garden

The Magic Hour of Stillness in the Garden

During the long summer days, when the sun rises by 5:30 a.m., I quietly slip out of the house for an hour alone in the garden. It’s my favourite part of the day — pulling weeds, watering, harvesting, or tackling whatever seasonal task is needed. I always pause for a morning prayer and to take in the sounds and sights of the sunrise. Now and then, I’m lucky enough to spot a deer or a chipmunk moving through the stillness.

This gentle hour is often my most present and productive time of day. I skip the phone scrolling and coffee, drag my sleepy feet out of bed, and let nature wake me up. Within minutes of moving my body and breathing in the morning air, I feel alive. Before the family wakes and the rhythm of the day begins, I get a quiet moment just for myself.

Once in a while, if the baby naps well, I get another hour later — but lately, that feels rare. I’ve learned not to be hard on myself when things don’t all get done. Family always comes first. Still, I cherish the satisfaction of finishing a big task before the day even begins.
