Why Wedding Flowers Are So Expensive in Ontario

If you're planning a wedding in Ontario right now, you've probably felt it: the costs are high — sometimes shockingly high. It’s not just you. The “wedding tax” is real, especially in cities like Toronto where prices have climbed fast in the last few years. Flowers are no exception.

Since COVID, the entire floral industry has changed. Supply chains got messy. Global flower production slowed down. Tariff uncertainties made international shipping more expensive and unpredictable. Add in fuel costs, labour shortages, and layers of wholesale markups, and suddenly a bouquet that used to cost $100 is now being priced at $250 or more. It’s no wonder couples are feeling overwhelmed.

What most people don’t realize is how many hands flowers pass through before they reach your wedding day. There’s the grower, the exporter, the importer, the wholesaler, the florist — and each one adds a layer of cost. That’s not necessarily bad, it’s just how the system works. But it does mean you're paying for far more than the flowers themselves.

That's one of the reasons I started growing my own. At Harvest Hill Flower Farm, I’m cutting out all those middle steps. I grow, harvest, and dry the flowers myself, right here in Port Perry. No shipping planes. No warehouses. No extra markups.

I also believe a bridal bouquet shouldn't cost as much as a car payment. I know how meaningful weddings are — and I know how quickly the costs can add up. That’s why I’m choosing to remove the wedding tax from my dried bouquets. My pricing reflects the real time and care I put into each stem, but it also reflects my values: simplicity, honesty, and making beauty accessible.

Buying local isn’t just more affordable — it’s also better for the environment. When your flowers are grown down the road instead of flown in from another continent, the impact is lighter. And that matters. It means you’re not only celebrating your love, but also investing in your community and supporting Canadian agriculture.

So if you’re planning a wedding and you want flowers that are both beautiful and rooted in intention, I’d love to be part of your day. My dried wedding bouquets are available across Canada, and each one is made with flowers grown slowly and naturally — no shortcuts, no surprises.
