Dried wedding flowers have become one of my favourite ways to create wedding florals. They have a completely different look and feel from fresh flowers, and when they're grown and dried naturally, you can see so much of the character of the original flower in the finished bouquet.
I've worked in the wedding industry for more than a decade as a photographer, florist, and wedding professional, and I've seen a lot of different approaches to wedding flowers over the years. What to Look for When Buying Dried Wedding Flowers
Not all dried wedding flowers are the same, and this is something I think is easy to overlook when you're shopping online.
Ask where the flowers come from
If having locally grown flowers is important to you, ask your florist or flower grower where the flowers were grown. "Dried flowers" doesn't necessarily mean "locally grown flowers." Many dried flowers sold in Canada are imported, and that's completely fine if that's what you're looking for. But if you specifically want Ontario-grown flowers, it's worth asking.
Look at the actual wedding work
I'd also spend some time looking through real wedding bouquets rather than judging a business from one beautiful product photo. Dried flowers can be arranged in so many different ways. Some bouquets are loose and meadow-like, some are very structured, and others are much fuller and more abundant.
Think about how you want your bouquet to look in your wedding photographs, not just how you want it to look sitting on a table.
Ask whether the flowers are naturally dried or preserved
There's a difference between naturally dried flowers and preserved flowers. Naturally dried flowers have simply been allowed to lose their moisture, while preserved flowers may have been treated to maintain a particular colour or texture.
Neither is necessarily better. It really comes down to the look you're after. If you love soft, muted, slightly imperfect colour, naturally dried flowers may be more your style. If you want very specific colours or certain flowers that don't naturally dry that way, preserved flowers can give you more options.
Think about your wedding date
One of the great things about dried wedding flowers is that your bouquet doesn't have to be made from whatever happens to be blooming on your wedding day.
Flowers can be harvested and dried months in advance, which makes dried flowers particularly useful for winter weddings, early spring weddings, late fall weddings, and couples planning their flowers well ahead of time.
Ask how fragile the bouquet will be
Dried flowers are surprisingly durable, but they're still flowers. Some varieties are much more delicate than others, and a bouquet that's been shipped across the country needs to be packaged carefully.

Are Dried Wedding Flowers Right for You?
I think dried flowers are particularly lovely for couples who want their wedding bouquet to become a keepsake rather than something that gets thrown away at the end of the weekend.
They're also lightweight, don't require water or refrigeration, can be prepared well in advance, and are easy to transport. And unlike fresh flowers, you can keep your bouquet after the wedding and display it in your home.
There are a few trade-offs, too. Dried flowers have a different appearance from fresh flowers, and they tend to have less of the big, lush volume you get from certain fresh blooms. Some flowers are also naturally more delicate once dried. I think it's important to embrace that rather than trying to make dried flowers look exactly like fresh ones.
To me, that's part of the beauty.
Choosing Your Ontario Dried Wedding Florist
There are quite a few ways to buy dried wedding flowers in Ontario, and the best choice really depends on what matters most to you.
If you want flowers grown right here in Ontario and a bouquet with a natural, meadow-inspired look, a local flower farm may be the right fit. If you want a very specific preserved flower or colour palette, a florist who works with a wider range of imported and preserved materials may give you more options. And if you're planning your own wedding flowers, buying individual dried stems can be a great way to keep costs down and add your own personal touch.
My biggest piece of advice is to choose the flowers based on the overall feeling you want for your wedding rather than trying to recreate a fresh-flower bouquet using dried flowers.
Dried flowers have their own personality. They have texture, movement, natural colour variation, and a slightly wild quality that I think makes them especially beautiful for weddings.
And perhaps my favourite thing about them is what happens after the wedding. Your bouquet doesn't have to disappear when the day is over. You can bring it home, hang it on the wall, put it in a vase, or keep it somewhere you'll see it every day.
